Top 3 Steps to Prepare for Applying to Graduate School in Fall 2024

If you're gearing up to apply to graduate school in Fall 2024, now is the time to start preparing. The application process can be overwhelming, but you can position yourself for success with the right steps. Before institutions revert to the test required, budget cuts reduce program options, or you put off applying out of fear, let me advise you on the top three things you should do to prepare for applications that will set you up for success.

1. Research Programs and Identify Your Best Fit

The first and most critical step in preparing for graduate school is researching potential programs. It's essential to understand what each program offers, including faculty expertise, curriculum, research opportunities, and program culture. List schools and programs that align with your academic interests, career goals, and values.

  • Action Step: Go to our website resource page to get a copy of “Factors to Consider Before You Apply to Graduate School.”  This document will help you compare programs, noting critical factors like location, funding opportunities, program length, and faculty research interests. This will help you narrow your options to the programs that best fit your goals.

2. Start Preparing Your Application Materials Early

Graduate school applications typically require several components: a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and standardized test scores (if applicable). Starting early allows you to craft strong application materials that reflect your strengths and dedication.

  • Action Step: Begin drafting your statement of purpose now. Don’t forget to check out our blog post on what to include. Seek feedback from mentors or advisors to refine your narrative is important.  Our Personal Statement Advantage (PSA) program will teach you our step-by-step process for how to write a statement that highlights your strengths, goals, and reasons for applying to the program. Our writing experts provide editing, feedback, and guidance for making your personal statement the best admissions committees have ever read. For more information, click here.  Additionally, reach out to potential recommenders early, giving them ample time to write a compelling letter on your behalf.

3. get your letters of recommendation now

Your relationships with Tier 1 recommenders are faculty members who can significantly impact your graduate school application. Faculty who know you well can write strong letters of recommendation and provide guidance on programs and opportunities. Outside of faculty, build relationships with Tier 2 recommenders, supervisors, and industry leaders you have relationships with, who can speak directly to your skills, abilities, and fit for the program. Now is the time to deepen those relationships. Give your recommenders at least 4-6 weeks to write and submit your letters of recommendation.  Don’t forget to ask for a copy before they hit submit.  As a former admissions coordinator, it sucks to read letters that reflect the recommender doesn’t know the person, their goals, or what our program is all about.

  • Action Step: Schedule meetings with Tier 1 recommenders whose courses you've excelled in or whose research aligns with your interests. Additionally, schedule a meeting with your Tier 2 recommenders to discuss your goals and how this degree will help you accomplish them. The main objective is for you to discuss your graduate school goals, seek their advice on your application strategy, and ask them to write a letter of recommendation for you. The letter will strengthen your application and provide valuable insights into your ability to be successful in the program and your chosen field.
